Carrier Oils Guide for Skincare & Haircare

The Ultimate Guide to Carrier Oils for Skincare & Haircare

What every beauty brand, formulator, and B2B buyer needs to know – from a 20 year producer of cold pressed oils.

1. What Are Carrier Oils?

Carrier oils are vegetable oils extracted from the fatty parts of plants – seeds, nuts, or kernels. They are called "carrier" oils because they are used to dilute essential oils before applying to the skin, but they are not just diluents. Carrier oils themselves contain vitamins, fatty acids, and antioxidants that nourish and protect the skin.

Unlike essential oils, carrier oils are not volatile. They do not evaporate quickly and are generally safe to use undiluted.

At Green Fields Oils, all our carrier oils are cold pressed – mechanically pressed without heat or chemicals – to preserve their natural goodness.

2. Why Cold Pressed Carrier Oils Are Superior

Not all carrier oils are equal. Many commercial oils are refined using high heat and chemical solvents (like hexane). This process destroys natural vitamins and antioxidants, removes the oil’s natural colour and aroma, and produces a bland, uniform product.

Cold pressed carrier oils retain:

• Natural vitamin E (a powerful antioxidant)

• Essential fatty acids (omega 3, 6, 9)

• The oil’s characteristic colour, smell, and texture

For skincare and haircare brands, cold pressed is the only choice for premium, effective products.

3. The Carrier Oils We Produce (And Their Traditional Uses)

All our oils are 100% pure, cold pressed, unrefined, and free from additives. Below are the most popular carrier oils for beauty and wellness applications.

Jojoba

• Skin Type / Best For: All skin types, especially oily, acne prone, combination

• Key Properties: Technically a wax ester, it mimics human sebum. Non comedogenic, anti inflammatory, absorbs quickly. Ideal for face serums, balms, and hair oil.

Coconut

• Skin Type / Best For: Dry skin, hair masks, body butters, oil cleansing

• Key Properties: Rich in medium chain triglycerides (MCTs). Deeply moisturising, antimicrobial. Solid at room temperature. Best for leave on products and body butters.

Sweet Almond

• Skin Type / Best For: Sensitive skin, under eye circles, massage, baby care

• Key Properties: Lightweight, high in vitamin E and oleic acid. Soothing and gentle. Very popular for massage oils and facial serums.

Pomegranate Seed

• Skin Type / Best For: Mature, ageing, dry, or damaged skin; all skin types but especially recommended for prematurely ageing, mature, dry, or damaged skin.

• Key Properties: Exceptionally rich in antioxidant punicic acid (Omega 5, unique to pomegranate) which helps protect collagen fibres and promote cell regeneration. Deeply moisturising and helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Offers strong anti inflammatory benefits. Golden yellow colour with a distinctive nutty aroma. Highly valued for both skincare and haircare as a conditioning agent to promote shine.

4. How to Choose the Right Carrier Oil for Your Product

• Facial serum (mature/dry): Pomegranate Seed, Sweet Almond

• Facial serum (oily/acne): Jojoba

• Anti ageing treatment: Pomegranate Seed (for its collagen supporting and antioxidant properties)

• Body lotion / butter: Coconut, Jojoba

• Massage oil: Sweet Almond (or blend)

• Hair oil / scalp treatment: Jojoba, Coconut, Pomegranate (helps add shine and conditions the scalp)

• Beard oil: Jojoba

• Cleansing oil: Coconut

Blending tip: Combine a heavier oil (like coconut) with a lighter one (like jojoba) to adjust texture and absorption. You can also blend pomegranate seed oil at 1 3% of your formula to add potent antioxidants without changing the overall texture significantly.

5. B2B Sourcing: What to Look for in a Carrier Oil Supplier

When you buy carrier oils for your brand, do not settle for vague labels. Here is our checklist:

• Cold pressed & unrefined – No heat, no solvents, no chemical refining.

• 100% pure – No additives, no fillers, no preservatives.

• Fresh & properly stored – Oils oxidise. Check production date and storage conditions.

• Traceable sourcing – Where do the seeds come from? Direct from farms is best.

• Third party testing – Certificates of analysis (GC/MS) prove purity.

• Certifications – ISO, HACCP, HALAL (we have all three).
